Almost There and Oh My God

The knitting on Brigade is done, but I forgot that sweaters need to be blocked and now it's currently drying (which will for sure take days and days), but I have the zipper all ready to install, all ends are already woven in, and pretty soon this guy will be all ready for his public debut.

and now for the Oh My God portion of this post.  You guys will not believe what I found in my closet the other day!  Remember how I just showed you all most of the UFOs I have sitting around?  Well this one trumps them all.  It goes way beyond any of my knitting projects.  In fact, I started it 5 years before I even learned how to knit, that's how old this thing is.  Ready?

It is, or at least at some point was, destined to become a pillow.  My parents have moved twice since I started it.  I personally have moved to a completely different state and have lived in at least 7 different dorm rooms and each time I pack up and move, this thing comes with me.  It has been in the works for EIGHT YEARS.  I think this wins the award for UFO Of The Century.  If I ever decide to go back and finish it, I'll let you guys know (I haven't actually worked on it in probably more than 7 years).

  1. I have a few of those, and I went through a buying-kits-on-ebay phase a while ago. Sigh...

  2. Great looking sweater, I can't wait until I see the pics of you wearing it! Your work is Awesome (as usual). I love the cross stitch pillow cover, it looks great (don't worry, when you get old, 8 years is like a month to you now)

  3. The sweater looks great! I have one blocking right now, too. Cool! We're blocking twins!

    I'll shut up now.

  4. Hey, now I don't feel so bad! Before I started knitting or crocheting, I dabbled in cross stitch. I actually finished a couple of small pieces, but alas, most now lay fallow since being long-trumped by yarn work :) Now that I think of it, it was probably the cross stitch that nudged me towards working with yarn in the first place. A couple of those ufo's are pretty ambitious, so I'm not sure when (if) I'd ever get back to them. Oh well, the best way to get over any of that guilt is to just start knitting away...lol!

  5. The sweater looks great! At least, that project isn't old enough to vote. ;^)

  6. The sweater! It looks wonderful. That is an impressively long time for a UFO to lurk in hiding. Do you think you'll ever pick it up again? If not, maybe you could frame the finished portion(?).

  9. I finished a pillow a few years ago that my grandmother had started in the late 70s. She passed away before it was finished and my mum did some work on it in the 80s. Then I finished it off, I think it was 25 years in the making. I love that it has three generations of us working on it.

If you wanted to send your cross stitch this way, we could do a trans-continental pillow :)

  10. Oh, wow. I don't think I have any UFOs quite THAT old! Wait, I actually might: last time I cleaned out my tub 'o yarn, I did discover an unfinished, improvised-pattern bag I was making in bulky acrylic, which would have to be from my freshman year of college, which actually was that long ago! Wow, I'm getting old.

The cross stitch looks really pretty!

  11. The sweater is a very nice moss green colour and it's going to be very nice when it's dry. Also, the beginning of your pillowcase is too cute! You really need to finish it. I adore the beautiful design. It reminds me of a Buddhist sand painting. You definitely have enough projects to keep you busy for at least a year without starting any others. We will call you Mr. Multitasker. LOL... Be well and stay warm! This cold weather is driving me bonkers.

  12. The sweater looks great - the color is absolutely scrumptious. If you are into greens, as I am. ;-)

When I moved to my current locale, I had to throw away a cross stitch Christmas stocking I had started when I lived in Hawaii. I'll let you do the Math - I moved from HI in 98.. I moved to where I'm at now in 2006.

    /sigh

  13. That needlepoint (is it cross stitch?) is really neat! Is there any way you could salvage the small square designs and incorporate them into something else so that you don't feel obligated to finish the rest of the pillow? Otherwise, just hold onto it as long as you possibly can and maybe you can make a Guinness world record for UFO.

  14. my mom has a very old UFO. it's a baby sweater she started when she was pregnant with me. i'll be 40 in june. :) she thought she'd finish it when she was pregnant with my brother. didn't happen. then she thought she'd try and finish it when i was pregnant with my first child....i think you can see where this is going.

(i think all the sweater needs is sleeves)

  15. Beautiful sweater! Oh, I'm sure there are some of us with older UFOs around, as in older even than you are right now...

  16. That needlepoint is gorgeous. I don't usually go for such bright colors but they all combine very very nicely. I have to say that I delve back into needlepoint once in a while and it's really fun to do it after being used to knitting and spinning. I recommend it!
