Good Evening, September

I won't even bother asking what happened to August, because I have a feeling that most of us are in the same boat right now and that no one knows.  There's no denying that Autumn is right around the corner, and I can no longer use "it's still August" as my ridiculous denial of the truth.

A few days ago I finally pulled out a pair of jeans, and just this morning I threw on my Cobblestone once again.  I am still refusing to wear socks, although I fear that tomorrow will prove to be yet another win for this colder weather coming our way.

Although socks have not yet made it back into my wardrobe, I did throw on this pair momentarily to show you that they are finished.

My brother heads off to the big, bad world of College on Thursday and I wanted to get these done before he left.  I actually think I knit the second one in less than 24 hours (which isn't as impressive as it sounds because I was using worsted-weight yarn and there were only 48 stitches in a round.)  I used size 5 needles and some leftover Cascade 220.  David's Toe-Up Sock Cookbook (rav. link) made these socks so straightforward to make and I could not be more pleased with the way they turned out.  They fit perfectly with just the right amount of negative ease.  I definitely recommend giving it a try.

With this project done, I have only to finish some secret knitting (hopefully tonight - don't worry, it'll only be secret for a day or two) and then I can actually get back to some projects I'm knitting for myself.  That's right - no deadlines, no eager recipients.  Just me and my knitting.

Of course, today another brother requested a pair of mittens to match the hat I made him last winter (using Malabrigo, I don't know how well that one'll turn out) and a Ravenclaw Scarf, but I'm not going to think about those for a little bit.  I want to at least finish poor Delain first.

So, with the start of September, I am seeing an end to my summer knitting and will soon be welcoming the larger woolen projects back into my life.  How about you?

  1. I still have several months of summer left, alas. It never gets cool enough here for big woolen anything.

  2. Looks like they turned out wonderfully! Maybe I should be socking with worsted instead of the skinny stuff; 24 hours instead of a months is sounding pretty tempting. :-)

  3. Do you have a dozen brothers?
Somehow, I think you could handle that many.
    Lovely socks.
I, for one, love the cooler days and nights.

  4. The socks are really nice. I agree with Dave; I want to churn out 3 pairs of socks a week. However, I would need to go buy all new shoes if I started wearing socks made with worsted weight yarn.

I can't believe you are already wearing a sweater! It's still a bit too warm for that here. That could be just me, though. I would so much rather feel a little cool than a little warm.

  5. It finally dipped down into the 40's here last night, though it was doing that well into June this year, too. I put on jeans and a long-sleeved shirt *and* sweatshirt today, but it was only because I was dragging myself over to the hospital to get my nostrils swabbed to test for swine flu. When I got home, it was back out of clothes and back into bed.

  6. It's already much cooler here in the mornings. But you know me - still sloggin' on the sweaters!

  7. Talk about coy with that socks and leaf post there. :P Very chi-chi knitting magazine! They came out great, I'm sure they'll get a lot of love.

It's great that you have family who appreciates the handknits, just remember to strictly ration them or you'll never get to knit anything for yourself!

  8. The transition between sandals and shoes is always a hard one for me. I always have a brief moment of silence when it's time to put them away until Spring.

    Enjoy knitting with no deadlines!

  9. Ugh, I am not ready for the return of Fall and cooler temps yet - I didn't even get to experience heat this "Summer!" So let us speak of it not.

  10. I just love this change in the season... I haven't started wearing socks again yet, either, but it is just around the corner. These look wonderful. I was curious how many brothers you have too! now they will all want socks :)

  14. Yay for finishing up those socks! I'm sure Pat will be very happy with them. (Don't tell Mark, but I *still* haven't started on his socks.)

I'm curious about which one requested a Ravenclaw scarf though. Let me guess...was it Tom? ;-)

  15. I can totally sympathize with most of what you said here... the one good thing about the end of bare-foot weather is having handknit socks to ward off the cold :)

  16. I like the bit about refusing to wear socks (except for modeling purposes). I too lost August and am re-emerging. The latter is a plus for my knitting!

Any secret progress ready for revealing yet?

When do you start back to school (or is this a taboo question...)?
